The stratovolcanoes, Pavlof and Pavlof Sister, lie east of Emmons Lake caldera.

Historic Activity:

  • Pavlof is probably the most consistently active volcano in the Aleutian arc with at least 36 eruptions since 1790.

Recent Activity:

  • In Nov. 1983, vigorous explosions accompanied strong seismicity. In April 1986, an ash plume rose to 5 km. During June to Sept. 1986, strombolian activity and a lava flow were reported. From Nov. 1986 to Feb. 1987, small lava fountains fed lava flows which reach the ocean. New tephra was reported on its slopes in mid August, 1988.
