Geologic Background:

Volcan Casita, containing an elongated summit crater, is part of the San Cristobal complex which consists of five principal volcanic edifices that form the northwest end of the Marrabios Range.

Historic Activity:

  • Castia was last reported active in the 16th century. Eruption in 1550.

Recent Activity:

  • Fumaroles along fissure.
  • Heavy rains from hurricane Mitch (Oct. 1998) resulted in deadly avalanche and lahar.
