GEOLOGIC HISTORY
Slamet, the second highest volcano on Java after Semeru,
and one of its most active. It has a cluster of more than
two dozen cinder cones on its lower SE-NE flanks and a
single cinder cone on the western flank. Gunung Malang II
cinder cone on the upper eastern flank fed a lava flow that
extends 6 km to the east. Four craters occur at the summit
of Gunung Slamet, with activity migrating to the SW over
time.
Historic Activity:
- 38 eruptions in past 200 years. Historical eruptions,
recorded since the 18th century, have originated from a
150-m-deep, 450-m-wide, steep-walled crater at the
western part of the summit and have consisted of
explosive eruptions generally lasting a few days to a few
weeks.
Recent Activity:
- Following 15 years of quiescence, an eruption began
on July 12, 1988 with ash and incandescent tephra ejected
to 100 m above the vent. After July 19th, only quiet
fuming persisted.
- Since then, activity has been characterized by
earthquakes associated with gas emissions, and a period
of weak Strombolian activity in July 1989.
- Seismicity increased in January-February 1995.
- Moderate eruptive activity in 1999.
- Seismicity in early 2000, small explosions in
September
