GEOLOGIC HISTORY

Dempo is a prominent 3,173-m-high stratovolcano that rises above the Pasumah Plain of southeast Sumatra. Remnants of seven craters are found at or near the summit with volcanism migrating to the WNW with time.

Historic Activity:

  • At least 23 eruptions since 1817. Eurptions in 1817, 1839, 1853, 1879, 1880, 1881 (2), 1884, 1895, 1900 (2), 1905, 1908, 1921, 1923, 1926, 1934, 1936, 1939, 1940 (2), 1973, 1974.
  • Historical activity has been from the Gunung Dempo summit crater.
