GEOLOGIC HISTORY
Iliboleng stratovolcano was constructed at the SE end of
Adonara Island across a narrow strait from Lomblen Island.
The volcano is capped by multiple, partially overlapping
summit craters. Lava flows modify its profile, and a cone
low on the SE flank, Balile, has also produced lava
flows.
Historic Activity:
- Since 1885, Iliboleng has had at least 20 moderately
explosive ash eruption.
- Eruptions in 1885, 1888, 1904, 1909, 1925, 1927,
1944, 1948-1951, and 1973-1974.
- Historical eruptions have consisted of moderate
explosive activity, with lava flows accompanying only the
1888 eruption.
- An eruption from April 1973 to April 1974 ejected
tephra from the central crater that destroyed flank
vegetation.
Recent Activity:
- Several hours of tephra eruption on November 17,
1982.
- On May 28, 1986 a single explosion ejected
incandescent material which resulted in several large
grass fires. On July 18, 1986 an eruption ejected an ash
cloud to about 800 m above the summit. Several explosions
in November, 1986 ejected ash columns which reach a 1000
m above the summit.
- Large explosion on October 2, 1987.
- Gas and ash emissions from May to June 1991. Small
ash eruptions on Nov. 3 and Nov. 15.
