GEOLOGIC HISTORY

Paluweh volcano, also known as Rokatenda, forms the 8-km-wide island of Paluweh north of the volcanic arc that cuts across Flores Island. The summit region contains overlapping craters and lava domes; several flank vents occur along a NW-trending fissure.

Historic Activity:

  • The largest historical eruption of Paluweh occurred in 1928, when an explosive eruption and lava dome emplacement was accompanied by landslide-induced tsunamis.

Recent Activity:

  • Eruption began in Nov. 1980 and continued into late 1981 with dome growth and pyroclastic flows.
