GEOLOGIC HISTORY

Historic Activity: Located on Sumbawa Island. Its giant eruption in 1815 exceeded the size and power of Krakatau. The explosion, followed by caldera collapse, is estimated to have produced about 40 cubic kilometers of ash and blocks. Ten thousand people were killed by the eruption and 80,000 starved in the resulting crop loss and famine. World climate may have been affected.
