GEOLOGIC HISTORY

Adatara volcano, situated about 15 km SE of Fukushima city and E of Bandai volcano, lies on the volcanic front of NE Japan. The volcano occupies an area 9 km EW by 14 km NS and is composed of three cones (Maegatake, Osoyozan, and Adatara) that are basaltic to andesitic in composition. The summit is a lava dome.

Historic Activity: Historically, activity has occurred in the summit crater Numano-taira (rim elev. 1709 m; 1.2 km across by 350 m deep), which is surrounded by fumarolic and hot spring areas. The volcano erupted on Aug. 24, 1899 and July 17, 1900. During the 1900 eruption, 72 people at a sulphur refinery on the rim of the crater were killed by the eruption.

Recent Activity: First case of tremor since the local observatory began observations in 1965. Additional reports of tremor on four days in April 1996. A small-scale phreatic eruption suddenly took place on Sept. 1, mud and strong odor of sulfurous gas were noted.
