GEOLOGIC HISTORY

Asama, Honshu's most active volcano, is located at the junction of the Izu-Marianas and NE Japan arcs.

Historic Activity: Asama has a historical record dating back more than 1,300 years.

Recent Activity:

  • The April 26, 1982 eruption produced a small pyroclastic flow and ashfall that reached the Pacific coast (about 200 km E of the volcano). The eruption of Oct. 2, 1982 casused crop damage. The April 8, 1983 eruption produced ashfall that also reached the Pacific coast (250 km). Increased seismic activity and steam emissions from March to September 1990. Small ash eruptions occurred on July 20, 1990.
  • Increased seismic activity began in April 1995 and continued through June.
  • Increased seismic activity in June thru Nov. 1996.
