GEOLOGIC HISTORY

The Volcano is a 400-m-high lava dome that rests on 2000-m-high mountains underlain by sedimentary rocks. Several large pyroclastic flow eruptions are known in the past 1100 years.

Historic Activity: Its last eruption was a phreatic explosion from fissures in the N and W flanks on July 28, 1974. Ash fell as far as 100 km to the NE.

Recent Activity:

  • A white steam plume was present from May 1987 to September 1988.
  • Steam emission returned in late March 1989 with minor ash emissions in April 1989.
