GEOLOGIC HISTORY

This massive stratovolcano is constructed within a largely buried 4x5 km caldera. The volcano is one of the major objects of religious pilgrimage in central Japan.

Historic Activity: Its first historical eruption, in 1979, followed a lengthy period of quiescence.

Recent Activity:

  • Three earthquake swarms and four periods of tremor in April 1991. Surface conditions remain unchanged. Increased seismicity continued into May with renewed steaming from 1979 vent. Seismicity decreased in June and July.
  • Earthquake swarm on Nov. 12, 1992.
  • Increased tremor in late August 1995.
  • High seismicity was recorded on July 6, 1996 with a total of 29 earthquakes.
