Geologic Background:

A submarine volcano detected by underwater noises on hydrophones. The summit of this seamount rises to within 140 meters of the surface.

Historic Activity:

  • At least 4 eruptions have been heard but not seen between 1958 and 1970.

Recent Activity:

  • From June to August 1986, submarine activity was indicated by hydrophone noise and the presence of discolored water.
  • During a 1992 cruise, gas bubbles were detected acoustically, rising from the crest of Rumble III.
