Geologic Background:

Ahyi seamount is a large conical submarine volcano that rises to within about 140 m of the surface

Historic Activity:

  • Water discoloration has been observed over the volcano.
  • In 1979 the crew of a fishing boat felt shocks over the summit area followed by upwelling of sulfur-bearing water.

Recent Activity:

  • A short episode of ezplosive submarine volcanism was recorded on April 24, 2001
