Geologic Background:

Zhupanovsky is in the E Kamchatka district of Cape Shipunsky, between the Nalycheva and Zhupanova Rivers. The Zhupanovsky volcanic massif contains 4 summit craters along a WNW-trending summit ridge. Zhupanovsky is a basaltic-andesitic complex.

Historic Activity:

  • Seven explosive eruptions from Zhupanovsky have been documented since 1776, the most recent in 1959.
  • The historical eruptions have consisted of moderate Vulcanian explosions.

Recent Activity:

  • Fumarolic activity was observed in February 1990 from 2 vents inside the active crater (3rd from the E) and 2 vents to the W.
  • An overflight on Aug. 24, 1993 revealed that significant fumarolic activity was present in the summit area. Fumarolic emissions were coming from the active crater, as well as from other parts of the summit ridge west of the second cone's crater. Yellow sulfur deposits were visible at several locations.
