GEOLOGIC HISTORY

The highest summit on Paramushir Island. The Tatarinov group of 6 volcanic centers is located immediately to the south; a large ash layer deposited in the late 17th century is from the only known historical eruption of this group.

Historic Activity: Eruptions in 1853 (largest historic eruption), 1854-1859, 1957, 1958, 1961, 1964 and 1973.

Recent Activity:

  • A summit eruption began on Nov. 18 1986. The explosive eruption peaked 2 to 3 days later with ash clouds to heights of 11 km, followed by pyroclastic flows; lava emissions continued into December 1986.
  • Poor weather conditions prevented summit observations during an Aug. 22, 1993 overflight of the volcano. A fumarolic area at the foot of the southeast slope, near the pass between Tatarinov volcano and Chikurachki, was covered with yellow sulfur deposits.
