Geologic Background:
The flat-topped summit of the central cone of
Ebeko, on Paramushir Island, contains 3 craters along a
SSW-NNE line and several explosion craters on the slopes.
Historic Activity:
- Eruptions in 1793, 1859, 1934-1935, 1965, and 1967.
In 1934 a liquid sulfur flow was reported.
Recent Activity:
- Explosive eruptions from 2 vents occurred in October
and November 1987. Ejections of fine ash and steam
reached heights of 1 kilometer.
- An eruption that began Feb. 3, 1989 fromed a new
flank vent that emitted ash and gas. The explosive
activity ejected a plume that rose 2.5 km in April and
May. The eruption was continuing in late September.
- An August 1993 visit to the summit reportedfumarolic
activity concentrated mainly in the NW vent, the site of
the 1989 eruption, and inside the S crater.
