Geologic Background:
The boundaries of Craters of the Moon National
Monument were recently (November 2000) increased to
include the entire Craters of the Moon volcanic field.
The field contains a wide variety of basaltic landforms
including lava flows, cinder cones, spatter cones, lava
tubes, and tree molds. The center of the Craters of the
Moon field is located about 16 miles southwest of Arco,
Idaho.
