Geologic Background:

The Carrizozo Volcanic Field consists of two lava flows and the associated cinder cones. The older and smaller flow is known as the Broken Back Flow. The younger flow is known as the Carrizozo Flow (Valley of Fire Flow or Little Black Peak Flow). Flows are undated but estimated to be less than 1500 years old.
