Geologic Background:

At the summit of the Jemez Mountains (west of Santa Fe, New Mexico) is the Valles Caldera. This caldera (22 km in diameter) is the source for the well known Bandelier Tuff which was erupted during two major eruptions 1,450,000 and 1,120,000 years ago. Activity in the Jemez Volcanic Field began about 13,000,000 years ago
