Geologic Background:

The Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field is located in northeast New Mexico, roughly between the towns of Raton and Clayton. The earliest activity in the field occurred about 8,200,000 years ago. The volcanic field contains more than 100 basaltic cinder cone that range in age from 1,000,000 to 62,000 year old. Capulin National Monument preserves the youngest cinder cone.
